Department of Family and Community Medicine

The Department of Family and Community Medicine comprises two distinct scientific disciplines.

The first is Family Medicine, a broad clinical medical specialty aimed at providing continuous and comprehensive healthcare for individuals and families. This specialty covers common diseases across all age groups and genders, various body systems, and different disease conditions. Family physicians provide appropriate healthcare in health centers, clinics, hospitals, and emergency care settings, whether in urban or rural areas.

The second specialty is Community Medicine, which focuses on disease prevention at the community level. It studies the determinants of health and disease patterns among populations, as well as the impact of environmental and societal factors on health. Community physicians implement disease prevention programs, assess community health needs, manage healthcare teams, and advocate for policies that promote public health.

At the College of Medicine, Najran University, the Department of Family and Community Medicine educates and trains students in both disciplines, incorporating family medicine and primary healthcare curricula. These are reinforced by additional courses, either as independent subjects or integrated into other disciplines, such as epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, and environmental health.

Through this comprehensive approach, the department instills key principles in students, including patient-centered healthcare. Interactive teaching units focus on diverse skills alongside a curriculum based on the latest evidence-based medical knowledge. Students are trained to find, interpret, and apply verified medical information in patient care and to meet their healthcare needs. They also study models for chronic disease management, preventive care, and continuous quality improvement in clinical practice.

These interactive educational units equip students with essential skills that form the foundation of primary care knowledge, aligning with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

We continuously enhance our academic mission by updating our faculty’s scientific knowledge through weekly professional development meetings, which inevitably benefit both our students and patients. Additionally, we are committed to ongoing research efforts across various specialties.

We ask Allah for success in fulfilling our mission and contributing, alongside our students, to building a healthy, aware, and well-informed society.
